RESUMO

Background Few studies compared populations with similar genetic and culture background on different continents with standardized methods. Objective To describe methodological issues of the Study of Health in Pomerode - SHIP-Brazil and some characteristics of the participants of the baseline examination. Design and Setting Prospective, population-based cohort study of a representative sample of residents (aged 20 to 79 years) of Pomerode, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Methods Data for the baseline survey (from 2014 to 2018) were collected through interviews and medical examinations, including socio-demographic and lifestyle information, clinical and subclinical conditions, oral and mental health, among others. Biosamples (blood, urine, stool, and saliva) were collected and stored. Methods of data collection and quality control are described. Preliminary descriptive statistics were performed. Results The response rate was 67.6% (n=2,488 individuals). The Kappa test-retest of some variables varied from 0.54 to 1.0. German culture participants are older (46.5 vs 38.7 years), self-declared white (97.3% vs 82.1%), more frequently never smokers (71.4% vs 66.9%) but had higher risk of consuming alcohol (16.9% vs 13.4%) compared to participants with non-German background. Germans were taller (169 cm vs 166 cm), had greater abdominal circumference among men (101.9 cm vs 97.3 cm). Furthermore, they reported more multimorbidity (56.7% vs 43.6%) , had more arterial hypertension (30.7% vs 18.5%), but less depression (15.4% vs 19,1%) than non-Germans. Conclusions The interaction of genetic and social/environmental issues should be examined to understand the role of risk factors on clinical conditions observed.

OBJECTIVE: The identification of factors that influence a favorable antituberculosis treatment outcome could be of great use for the promotion of specific health actions to increase the success rate. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate the factors affecting successful antituberculosis treatment in patients seen at a reference service in the Western region of São Paulo State/Brazil. METHODS: A retrospective study was carried out from 2010 to 2016 based on the data obtained from the Notification Disease Information System of TB patients treated at a reference service in Brazil. The study included patients with treatment outcomes and excluded those from the penitentiary system or with resistant or multidrug-resistant TB. Patients were categorized as having a successful (cured) or unsuccessful (treatment default and death) treatment outcome. The association between TB treatment outcomes and social and clinical factors was analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 356 cases of TB were treated between 2010 and 2016. Among the cases, the majority were cured and the overall treatment success rate was 85.96%, with a range between 80.33% (2010) and 97.65% (2016). After the exclusion of resistant/multidrug-resistant TB, 348 patients were analyzed. In the final logistic regression model analysis, education less than 8 years (OR 1.66; p<0.0001) and people living with human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (OR 0.23; p<0.0046) were found to be significantly related to an unfavorable treatment outcome. CONCLUSION: Low education and being a person living with human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome are vulnerability factors that can affect the successful outcome of antituberculosis treatment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/AIM: Anti-allergic drugs can inhibit the hard tissue resorption process, and due to similarities between root resorption and bone mechanisms, it can be inferred that these drugs may also control root resorption. The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of anti-allergic drugs used systemically on the process of root resorption following delayed tooth replantation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-two maxillary right incisors of rats were extracted and subsequently replanted. Rats were divided into four groups according to the anti-allergic drug administered: the rats in groups DEX, Q, and MO were treated systemically with dexamethasone phosphate, quercetin, and montelukast, respectively, and no systemic medication was administered to rats in group C. After 60 days, the animals were euthanized, and the specimens were processed for histomorphometric and immunohistochemical analyses. Statistical significance was set at P < .05. RESULTS: There were no significant differences between the groups in terms of inflammatory resorption, replacement resorption, or presence of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase. In terms of events occurring in the periodontal ligament space, there was a difference between groups Q and MO due to the presence of dental ankylosis and inflammatory connective tissue (P < .05). A difference in inflammatory cells was also observed through CD45 immunolabeling between the DEX and Q groups when compared to the C group (P < .05). CONCLUSION: The systemic administration of anti-allergic drugs did not have an effect on the process of root resorption following delayed tooth replantation.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Objective The aim was to evaluate the prevalence of dental caries, periodontal disease and edentulism in morbidly obese and bariatric patients, and to verify the oral health impact on quality of life. Methods We evaluated 33 morbidly obese patients (G1) and 50 patients submitted to bariatric surgery (G2). The DMFT, CPI, prosthetic status and prosthetic need for edentulism were used to analyze oral conditions. The impact of oral health on quality of life was assessed using the OIDP questionnaire. Results CPOD were G1: 9.0±7.0 and G2: 13.3±8.0 (p= 0.020). The dental calculus was the worst periodontal condition G1: 72.7% and G2: 80.0% (p= 0.752). The majority of G1 and G2 patients did not use (p = 0.878) and did not need (p= 0.132) dental prosthesis. The mean of OIDP was G1: 11.2±23.8 and G2: 14.16±23.8 (p= 0.089). Conclusion It concluded that bariatric patients have a higher prevalence of dental caries and the need for dental prostheses is related to the impact of oral health on the quality of life of obese patients.

RESUMO

Smoking is one of the main risk factor for periodontal disease, increasing its prevalence and severity. Probiotics emerged as an alternative for the prevention and treatment of many diseases, since it can modulate the host immune response and modify the modify the microbiome. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to evaluate the effects of probiotic administration on the periodontal tissues in rats exposed to cigarette smoke inhalation (CSI). Forty rats were allocated into the following groups (n=10): group C (control, without CSI and probiotic); group PROB (control+probiotic); group CSI (CSI) and group CSI+PROB (CSI+probiotic). Groups PROB and CSI+PROB received 2g of an association of probiotic microorganisms incorporated into the feed during 6 months. Groups CSI and CSI+PROB were exposed to CSI for 60 min daily. After six months all the animals were euthanized and the hemi-mandibles were collected and processed for microcomputed tomography analyses. Regarding the body weight of the animals, feed consumption was similar among the groups, however, after the second month groups C and PROB showed higher body weight gain when compared to groups CSI and CSI+PROB (p<0.05). Group CSI presented reduced bone mineral density (BMD), whereas group PROB showed the highest values (p=0.01). It can be concluded that administration of probiotics promoted an increase in BMD and, consequently, a protective effect on the mandibular bone structures in rats exposed to inhalation of cigarette smoke.

ABSTRACT Objective The aims of this study were to assess the prevalence of dental caries among preschoolers at public and private schools and to evaluate the associations among the prevalence of the disease, socioeconomic factors, and the impact of a university extension project. Methods Five-year-old preschool children were examined and were divided into three groups: children from private schools who were not receiving regular preventive care (group 1), children from public schools who were not receiving regular preventive care (group 2), children from public schools who were receiving preventive care through a university extension project (group 3). The children were examined for decay-missing-filled index, and their caregivers were interviewed to collect data on socioeconomic factors. Fisher's and Chi-squared tests were used to analyze the data. Results Group 1 showed better socioeconomic and oral conditions compared with groups 2 and 3. Parents'/guardians' level of education was associated with the presence of disease in their children; however, income showed no association. Conclusion Dental caries were more prevalent in the group with worse socioeconomic indicators, and although the university extension project had been implemented in one of the groups, it was not able to overcome health inequalities.

Gingival probing performed in periodontal normal condition brings important results for the definition of health and diseases of the periodontal tissues. The aim was to evaluate the depth probing of the gingival sulcus in permanent dentition of young adults. It was carried out a transversal study with 120 volunteers aged 18 to 25 years and with healthy gum. It was used a manual periodontal probe Williams model. The evaluation was performed on all four sides, with a total of four measurements per tooth. The collected data were first tabulated and submitted to Kruskal-Wallis test with Dunn's post test. The mean and standard deviation of the upper teeth were: incisor (1.1343 ± 0.33665); canine (1.1819 ± 0.369); premolar ratio (1.3677 ± 0.3752); molar(1.8030 ± 0.4116). The mean of the lower teeth was: incisor (1.1260 ± 0.3272); canine (1.2106 ± 0.3390); premolar ratio (1.4580 ± 0.3778); molar (1.9068 ± 0.4497).It concludes that the average depth of the gingival sulcus, between the group of teeth was higher in the lower arch relative to the upper; except for faces: incisive distal, buccal molar and the lingual incisor and canine; in which the result related to the average depth is less than the upper arch. (AU)

The teaching profession is considered by the International Labour Organization (ILO) as one of the most stressful as it is an activity that involves intense contact between people. Thus, an incidence of elements that lead to burnout syndrome is increasingly evident in these professionals. The aim of this study was to evaluate the burnout syndrome among professors of undergraduate health courses. The teachers at health courses at University of Western Sao Paulo were invited to enroll the research. After they given the written informed consent, it was applied two instruments to data collect. The data were analyzed on a statistical software with Pearson's correlation at 5% significance level. It was interviewed 72 professors, of whom 48 (66,7%) were male, and 24 (33,3%) were female. According to the dimensions of Burnout Syndrome, the most outstanding was Emotional Exhaustion. The variables that showed significance in the Pearson's correlation were: the number of courses the professors teach (p = 0.0012) and the number of students with whom they have daily contact (p = 0.0463) within the emotional exhaustion dimension; and age (p = 0.0319) and working time (p = 0.0082) within the dimension of Professional Effectiveness. Results identified a low index in all dimensions, but there was a statistical association between the dimensions of emotional exhaustion and professional efficacy with the sociodemographic variables (AU).

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between oral diseases and their impact on the daily performance of adult and elderly Brazilians, verify the association of oral diseases with socioeconomic and demographic features, and compare the standard estimate of need with the sociodental assessment of these same needs. The authors evaluated data from 17,398 Brazilians aged between 35-44 years and 65-74 years, taken from the cross-sectional Brazilian Oral Health Survey (Saúde Bucal Brasil - SBBrasil). Regression models were applied to assess associations among impacts on daily performance and income, schooling, gender, region, use of dental services, health perception and dental disease status. McNemar's test was applied to compare standard versus impact-related estimates of need. The prevalence ratio of these impacts was associated with the sociodemographic versus health perceptions (p < 0.001) of adults and the elderly. Adults also had impacts associated with loss of periodontal attachment (p < 0.001). The prevalence of normative needs was 95.39% for adults and 99.76% for the elderly, whereas the impact-related estimate of need was 50.92% and 43.71%, respectively. The impacted-related approach had a statistically significant association with the normative estimate of need (p < 0.001). This study showed a relationship between oral impact on daily performance of adults and educational level. Sociodemographic features were also related to the impacts on both adults and the elderly, and to health perception. The impacts among the adults were related to the loss of periodontal attachment. In addition, the authors found a sizable difference between the standard versus the sociodental approach, in that the sociodental assessment needs were lower than the needs identified by the standard estimate of need.

Todas as variáveis desfecho mostraram...

The aim of this study was to verify the correlations of periodontal disease, tooth loss and edentulousness with socioeconomic and demographic factors, health needs and health services as well as the impact of these correlations on oral health among Brazilian adults and elderly and compare the standard estimate of need with a sociodental assessment. The data originated from a national epidemiological survey on oral health conducted in 2010 by the Brazilian Health Ministry ("SBBrasil 2010"). The sample comprised 9779 people between 35-44 years old and 7619 elderly between 65-74 years old. The oral health outcomes were as follows: bleeding on probing and/or dental calculus, periodontal loss of attachment, tooth loss and edentulousness. Education level and declared income were used as indicators of socioeconomic status. Gender, ethnicity, region of residence, use of dental care, impact of teeth in daily activities, and other variables were added to the models to adjust the regression analysis. Poisson regression was performed to verify the socioeconomic and demographic disparities in oral health with regard to the proximal and distal determinants of health available in the data set. McNemar’s test was applied to compare standard estimates of need and the respective impact-related. The results showed associations (p<0.05) between socioeconomic and demographic aspects and all oral health variables. People who had up to 8 years of formal education had increased the prevalence to develop any of the oral diseases on this study. As much as adults whom declared income up to 500 BRL, that had increased the prevalence to develop three of the four studied conditions. Ethnicity had association with bleeding on probing/or dental calculus (PR=1.19) and tooth loss (PR=1.45) between adults who declared themselves as brown. Having a consultation performed at a public health clinic was a protective factor for edentulousness (PR=0.68) among the group with 35- 44 years old...

To characterize the dental radiology service in Paraíba State. From Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System, data collected were: total population, population covered by Primary Care (PC), number and distribution of dental X-ray equipment (DXRE), and dental radiographs production. The cities which had the equipment were grouped and compared according to Paraíba's regions. We calculated for each city: ratio between total population and amount of equipment; ratio between population covered by PC and quantity of public equipment; biannual and the monthly averages of radiographs production. Of the 223 cities, 21.1% are equipped with DXRE, which 356 are in use, 77.2% are private, and 66.9% concentrate in Zona da Mata region. The average of person per each DXRE is 16,609, while the average of people enrolled in PC for each public DXRE is 20,922. The biannual and the monthly production of radiographs are, respectively, 1,272 and 212. We found that 36.2% of the cities reported no X-rays production during the last half of 2008. The service is concentrated in a few cities, being mostly private, with a high rate of people per equipment and inequitable distribution. Probably, there is a production underreporting.
